Arriving at the end of the world city: Ushuaia

As soon as you arrive in Ushuaia , a properly identified person from Explora will be waiting to take you to your accommodation. The city is located at the southernmost point of the entire planet , for this reason it is popularly known as the "City at the end of the world". Depending on the time you arrive in the city, it will be possible to take some tours on your own through the streets near the hotel. We recommend that you visit some local restaurants and taste the exotic Centolla dish, which is a rare crustacean from the region similar to a giant crab.

Important: Be prepared for the cold. The ideal is to wear layers-style sweaters so that you can take them off as you walk and as your body warms up. A second skin, an intermediate coat and a raincoat complete the three layers. Wear Trekking shoes - or equivalent - that are comfortable. Take a pair of gloves, hats and whatever you think is convenient to protect yourself. Even with a cloudy day, never forget the sunscreen.

What will you do
Unique and indescribable experience!
We met at the tourist port of Ushuaia and set off on Route 3. On the way, we cut the Andes Mountains and followed the path enjoying the magnificent view of this place.

Our first stop will be to see the typical and famous Flag Trees. They are trees that have sloped a lot due to the strong winds of the Argentine Patagonia. They are beautiful and seeing them is a truly unique experience!

We continued on our journey and soon arrived at the legendary Estancia Harberton. It was the island's first resort, having been founded in 1886 by Thomas Bridges and is located on the shores of the Beagle Channel.

We got to know the resort and went to the Acatushúnde Aves and Mammals Austral Museum, near the pier. In this museum we can see the bones of whales, penguins, sea lions and dolphins.

We then left for the most anticipated part of our adventure: Martillo Island. We entered a semi rigid boat, where we sailed for about 20 minutes until we reached the island, where we disembarked.

Arriving there we see thousands of penguins !! Really a special tour !! We walk for 1h between the different species of penguins (mainly, Papúase de Magallães penguins). We saw beautiful chicks, with their gray fur, newly born in their nests, we can see them in their different stages of life. A really exciting and contagious adventure !!

In the summer, penguins settle on the island, along with other birds such as skúas, petreles, cormoranes and seagulls. So, in addition to living with the wonderful penguins on our island, we also see these birds endemic to the southern Patagonia.

After our careful walk around the island, we take the boat and then transport back to the center of Ushuaia for this incredible experience.

Then follow a zigzag of marked slope and sparse vegetation for an hour. The ascent continues and passes along another side and after 45 minutes you reach the Chilean campsite on the opposite bank of the river Ascencio, in the shadow of a beech forest, with moderate slope, crossing several slopes that fall from the Admiral Nieto. After about an hour and 10 minutes from the Chilean campsite, at 700 masl., you reach the foot of the moraine that gives access to the viewpoint. From this point, the path increases its slope.

1. Ice trekking on the Perito Moreno glacier

Ice trekking on the Perito Moreno glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most beautiful and emblematic landscapes in Patagonia.
Take the opportunity to see it in the most varied and intense ways !!

This unmissable experience begins in Porto "Bajo de las sombra", where we embark on a 15-minute navigation to cross the Brazo Rico. We got very close to the Glacier and at that moment we have a fantastic perception of how big it is.
Mountain guides will take you even closer to the glacier to catch crampones and form groups of up to 20 people to start the approach crossing.
Already on the glacier and with the crampons in place, the world takes a new perspective: blue lagoons, deep cracks, huge sinks, magical pits.
During the walk of about 1h30, the guides explain about the flora and fauna and about the general glaciology of the region, explaining about the specific phenomenon of ruptures of the Perito Moreno Glacier.
We sit on the glacier to rest and we will have time to enjoy and take beautiful pictures, and if you want to have a snack (not included). Fantastic experience being there, sitting on the glacier surrounded by mountains.
With the energy restored, we continued walking until we returned to the starting point, where we removed the staples and went down to the port.
We returned to the vessel satisfied and with this new adventure to tell.
We then pass the catwalks to see the Perito Moreno Glacier from the front. We see the beautiful shade of blue from this immense glacier and we take the opportunity to photograph it with a more open angle of view, watching as it rises from the lake to the top of the mountains enjoying a hot drink.

We suggest taking a bottle of water that can be replaced during the tour with the freezing water from the glaciers that is clean and free! We also suggest taking extra snacks in your backpack, such as cereal bars, chocolates, fruits, and remember to never leave waste inside the park.
