Welcome to La Paz!

Welcome to La Paz, Bolivia! We'll greet you at El Alto International Airport in La Paz and transfer you to your hotel. Once you are settled, we'll go over your program, answer questions and share knowledge about Bolivia. We recommend that you take it easy today since there is 50% less oxygen in the air than at sea level. Acclimatization is essential to enjoying yourselves.

To top it off, you will take a micro or local bus (think oldie Bluebird school buses painted a rainbow of colors) to the heart of the markets area. Here, you’ll be able to shop around and go to different markets, including the famous Witch’s Market. You'll have the afternoon free to rest or explore more of the city at night.

Island of the Sun & Santiago de Okola , the Sleeping Dragon

After a beautiful, short hike in the morning that takes you back to the island's small port, you'll board the ferry once again to the farming and fishing village of Santiago de Okola. The village has a small, community-based agritourism project, and you will be received by a group of locals who will host you in their homes and help you get to know their ways of life. Santiago de Okola is known as the "Home of the Sleeping Dragon," a massive rock outcropping that looks like a dragon.

In addition to a community tour and weaving workshop, you can hike to the crest of the Dragon.
At the end of the day, you'll enjoy a traditional meal and be treated to a bonfire under a magnificent star-filled sky.
